FusionProv: Towards a Provenance-Aware Distributed Filesystem
نویسندگان
چکیده
It has become increasingly important to capture and understand the origins and derivation of data (its provenance). A key issue in evaluating the feasibility of data provenance is its performance, overheads, and scalability. In this paper, we explore the feasibility of a management layer for parallel file systems, in which metadata includes both file operations and provenance metadata. We design and implement a provenance layer within a distributed file system —FusionFS, which implements a distributed file metadata management based on distributed hash tables. Our results show that FusionFS with its own storage layer for provenance capture is able to scale up to 1K nodes on BlueGene/P supercomputer.

A Distributed Provenance Aware Storage System
The provenance of a file represents the origin and history of the file data. A Distributed Provenance Aware Storage System (DPASS) tracks the provenance of files in a distributed file system. The provenance information can be used to identify potential dependencies between files in a filesystem. Some applications of provenance tracking include (i) tracking the transformations applied to process...
متن کاملCollecting Provenance via the Xen Hypervisor
The Provenance Aware Storage Systems project (PASS) currently collects system-level provenance by intercepting system calls in the Linux kernel and storing the provenance in a stackable filesystem. While this approach is reasonably efficient, it suffers from two significant drawbacks: each new revision of the kernel requires reintegration of PASS changes, the stability of which must be continua...
متن کاملTAP: Time-aware Provenance for Distributed Systems
In this paper, we explore the use of provenance for analyzing execution dynamics in distributed systems. We argue that provenance could have significant practical benefits for system administrators, e.g., for reasoning about changes in a system’s state, diagnosing protocol misconfigurations, detecting intrusions, and pinpointing performance bottlenecks. However, to realize this vision, we must ...
متن کاملData Provenance in Distributed Propagator Networks
Existing distributed programs often require provenance to be included in the design of the distributed computing framework. Distributed programs making use of data propagation do not have this restriction; propagator networks allow non-provenance-aware applications to be easily transformed into provenance-aware forms by simply modifying existing program structure.
متن کاملInProv: Visualizing Provenance Graphs with Radial Layouts and Time-Based Hierarchical Grouping
In provenance research, the large scale of data sets often complicates analysis and understanding. One solution is visualization, a tool that enables scientists and analysts to understand large data sets. The standard format for visualizing provenance is the node-link diagram. However, while effective for understanding local activity, the node-link diagram fails to offer a high-level summary of...
